Ben Okri

Ben Okri was born in Nigeria in 1959, and now lives in England. At once a poet, a fiction writer and an essayist, he is best known for his novel The Famished Road, for which he won the Booker Prize in 1991. His latest book of fiction is The Age of Magic (2014), and his most recent volume of poetry, entitled Wild, was released in 2012. His first novels, Flowers and Shadows (1980) and The Landscapes Within (1981) use surrealism to show the dysfunction of a politically scarred country. This theme persists in Okri's work, which also includes the Booker Prize–winning novel The Famished Road (1991) and essay collection A Way of Being Free (1997). In April 2014, Okri was conferred an honorary doctorate by the University of Pretoria for his contributions to literature.

Okri is considered one of the foremost African authors in the post-modern and post-colonial traditions and has been compared favourably to authors such as Salman Rushdie and Gabriel García Márquez.
